Word Counter Formula
A word is any group of characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks, so “hello world” is two words and a number like “2026” counts as one word too. Characters are reported with spaces and without, since platforms enforce different limits. Sentences split on periods, exclamation marks, and question marks; paragraphs are blocks separated by line breaks. Reading time divides your word count by an average adult reading speed of about 200 words per minute.
When Counters Disagree
Two tools can count the same paragraph and differ by a word or two. A hyphen does not split a word, so “well-known” stays one word, while an em dash typed without spaces glues two words together. Abbreviations and decimals can inflate a sentence count. For a strict submission, confirm the count in your recipient’s tool.
Example Calculation
Try the sample sentence above: “Hello world. This is a test.” It has 6 words, 2 sentences, and 28 characters including spaces. A 450-word draft at 200 words per minute reads in 2.25 minutes, shown as 2 minutes 15 seconds. Paste either example above to check.

Common Length Targets
An X post is capped at 280 characters and an SMS segment at 160; a meta description should stay near 150 to 160 characters. A college essay runs 250 to 650 words, a blog post 800 to 1,500, and a novel 70,000 to 100,000.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly counts as a word?
Any string of characters separated by spaces counts as one word. Hyphenated terms like “well-known” count as one word, while numbers like “2026” also count as one word each.
How is reading time calculated?
Total words are divided by average reading speed, about 200 words per minute for adults. Dense text reads slower, so treat it as a guide, not a promise.
Does this tool save or upload my text?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser, so your writing never leaves your device. You can safely count sensitive documents.
Why do character limits matter on different platforms?
Social networks, meta descriptions, and ad headlines all enforce strict character caps. An X post allows 280 characters; a good meta description stays under about 160.
Should I count characters with or without spaces?
It depends on the requirement. Most platforms count spaces, so use the with-spaces figure unless the guidelines explicitly say otherwise.
Why does Word show a different word count than this tool?
Different tools make different calls on edge cases like hyphenated terms, abbreviations, and decimal numbers, so totals can differ by a word or two. For a strict submission, check with the counter your teacher or reader will use.
How many pages is 1,000 words?
At standard academic formatting (12-point font with 1-inch margins), 1,000 words is about 2 pages single-spaced or about 4 pages double-spaced.
