Remove the background from a talking-head video without uploading it. This tool uses an AI person-segmentation model in your browser, places you over a new scene, and lets you export the finished clip.
Best for one person facing the camera. Short clips work best: 60 seconds or less is recommended. Clips up to 1 hour are accepted in every browser. On a computer, Chrome or Edge can save the export straight to a file on your disk; everywhere, the export runs in real time, so keep this tab open while it works. Your video stays on your device; only the AI model files download.

Export runs in real time, so a 45-second clip takes about 45 seconds to record. Keep this tab open and in the foreground during export. The download format depends on your browser: Safari and some versions of Chrome can produce MP4, while Chrome and Firefox commonly produce WebM.
What this Video Background Remover does
This free Video Background Remover changes the scene behind a person in a short video. It is designed for talking-head clips: a creator speaking to the camera, a teacher recording a lesson, a job applicant introducing herself, a support agent filming an update, or a business owner recording a product announcement. Instead of asking you to upload the recording to a remote editing service, the tool performs person segmentation locally in the browser. It separates the person from the original scene frame by frame, draws a new background underneath, and records the combined result so you can download it.
The available replacements cover the choices most people need for a quick improvement. You can use a professional office, a VIP luxury home, a professional studio, a news anchor studio, or an outdoor park scene. You can choose a plain colour for a clean social clip, select the green screen colour for later editing, blur your real room when privacy matters more than a new location, or upload your own background image. The original video remains visible beside the processed canvas, so you can compare the framing and check whether hair, hands, clothing, and movement still look natural before exporting.
This is a background changer built for convenience and privacy, not a full video editor. It does not add captions, trim clips, mix music, stabilize shaky footage, or repair poor audio. Prepare the best short recording you can, use this page to replace the scene, and then move to your normal editor only if you need those extra production steps.
How the browser AI works
When you select a video, your browser reads its duration, dimensions, and frames directly from the file. The tool then downloads the ONNX Runtime library and the Robust Video Matting (RVM) model. RVM is an AI network built specifically for video rather than still photos: while the clip plays, it analyses each frame together with a memory of the frames before it, which keeps the person’s outline steadier from frame to frame. For every frame it predicts the foreground — the person in full colour — and an alpha matte that says how visible each pixel of the person is. The page draws the chosen background first and the person’s foreground over it using the alpha matte, creating the composite you see in the preview.
The preview is also the source of the export. When you press Export video, the page returns the clip to the beginning, plays it at normal speed, composites every frame again, and records the canvas with the browser MediaRecorder. It tries to include the original audio track with the processed video. This real-time method is why export takes about as long as the clip itself. It is also why a fast device, a current browser, and a shorter clip produce a smoother result.
Only the program code and AI model are fetched from the internet. The selected video and your optional background image are opened through local browser object URLs and are not sent to Grade Calculator Hub or to any AI provider. Closing the tab clears the working preview. This private-by-design approach is the main difference between this tool and conventional online background removers.
How to use it
- Record or choose a suitable clip. Face the camera, keep the camera still, and make sure the recording is no longer than 1 hour. A clip of 15 to 60 seconds is the practical sweet spot.
- Upload the video. Choose an MP4, WebM, or MOV file that your browser can play. The tool checks the duration as soon as the metadata loads and declines files over the 1-hour (3600-second) limit.
- Wait for the model. The first use needs a short model download. A still processed frame appears when the AI is ready.
- Pick a background. Try a preset scene for a natural setting, a solid colour for a bold social post, blur for privacy, or your own image for a branded look.
- Play and inspect the preview. Watch the edges around hair, glasses, shoulders, and moving hands. Change scenes if one background makes edge errors more noticeable.
- Select an export height. Use 360p for a small file and quick sharing, 480p for a balance of size and clarity, or 720p when detail matters and the device can keep up.
- Export in real time. Keep the tab open and in the foreground. The browser records the video from start to finish, then creates a download link.
- Download and check the file. Play the exported video all the way through before sharing it, and confirm that the sound and final frame are present.
Honest limits
People only. The matting model is a person model trained for human video matting. It is not a general object remover. Pets, products, vehicles, furniture, and multiple moving subjects may be partly removed, partly kept, or outlined incorrectly. One clearly visible person gives the most dependable result.
Clips up to 1 hour. Clips up to 60 seconds are recommended. The tool accepts clips up to 1 hour (3600 seconds) in every browser, and the export always runs in real time, so a 1-hour clip needs about 1 hour with this tab open and in the foreground. In Chrome or Edge on a computer the recording is written straight to a file on your disk. In other browsers it is written to the browser storage area (or held in memory on older browsers) until the download is ready, so for long exports use a computer with plenty of free memory and storage, keep the device plugged in, and do not switch apps. Very long recordings also increase heat and dropped frames. Trim a long recording into shorter sections for the most reliable result, or use a server-based editor for lectures, podcasts, films, or full lessons.
Maximum export height is 720p. Even if the original is 1080p or 4K, the processed export is reduced to the selected 360p, 480p, or 720p height. This protects performance and keeps the browser workload manageable. The width changes in proportion to the original aspect ratio, so vertical and square videos keep their shape.
The export format depends on the browser. The recorder asks for MP4 first when the browser supports it. Safari and some Chrome versions may therefore produce an MP4 file. Chrome and Firefox configurations that cannot record MP4 fall back to WebM. The download name and the note under the button show the actual format produced.
Live AI matting is not studio keying. A green screen in a controlled studio can produce cleaner edges than AI matting. Fine hair, transparent glasses, loose clothing, fast hand gestures, low light, and a background colour close to skin or clothing can all create flicker or rough edges. The preview is honest: if an edge problem is visible there, it will also be visible in the export.
Audio support can vary. The tool first tries the browser video-capture method and then a Web Audio fallback. Most standard clips keep their sound, but unusual codecs, damaged files, and browser restrictions can result in a silent export. Always play the downloaded file before deleting or replacing your original.
Tips for cleaner results
- Use bright, even light. Put the main light in front of your face rather than behind you. Avoid a bright window at your back, which can turn you into a dark silhouette.
- Create contrast with the room. A plain wall behind the subject helps the model find the body boundary. Avoid wearing colours that closely match a busy background.
- Keep the camera still. A tripod or a stack of books is better than a handheld shot. Camera shake makes the person and the original scene move differently, which exposes edge errors.
- Leave space around your head and hands. Do not crop the top of the head or let hands repeatedly leave and re-enter the frame.
- Move naturally, not suddenly. Normal speech gestures are fine. Fast waves, spinning, dancing, and walking toward the camera are harder for an AI matting model.
- Choose the background for the message. An office suits a professional update, the news anchor studio suits a presenter-style clip, a park suits a casual outdoor topic, and a studio suits a creator introduction. A dark scene can make dark hair harder to separate, while a lighter scene may reveal edge flicker around light clothing.
- Prepare a custom scene carefully. Use a wide image for a wide video and avoid a background with a person or a strong focal object competing behind you. If the picture is in an unsupported format, convert it first with our Image Format Converter. You can also combine several pictures into one backdrop with the Photo Collage Maker.
Browser tool or server-based remover?
Server-based services can process longer and higher-resolution videos because they run the segmentation on powerful computers. They may also offer polished templates and direct MP4 export. Those advantages come with trade-offs: the video normally has to be uploaded, processing may wait in a queue, free plans often add watermarks or restrict resolution, and regular use may require an account or subscription. A private recording also leaves your device and is handled by a third party.
This browser tool makes a different trade. It is free to use, needs no account, adds no watermark, and never receives your video on a server. In return, it accepts shorter clips, works at up to 720p, depends on the speed of your device, and exports in real time. For a short announcement, lesson introduction, profile clip, or social video, that is often the faster and more private route. For a long presentation or a commercial production, a desktop editor or a reputable server service remains the better fit.
Creators who publish the finished clip can pair it with a channel link or profile code using our QR Code Generator. Keep the original recording in your own files as a backup, because the exported version is a new recording of the processed canvas rather than an edited copy of the source file.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tool upload my video?
No. The video is read and processed locally in your browser, and it is not uploaded to Grade Calculator Hub. Only the AI program files (ONNX Runtime) and the matting model download when the tool loads.
What kind of video works best?
A short talking-head video with one person facing a still camera works best. Use bright, even lighting, keep your head and hands inside the frame, and choose a clip of 60 seconds or less when possible.
How long can my video be?
Clips up to 1 hour (3600 seconds) are accepted in every browser. The export runs in real time, so a longer clip keeps this tab busy for as long as the clip lasts. In Chrome or Edge on a computer the recording is saved straight to a file on your disk. In other browsers it is written to the browser storage area until the download is ready, so for the longest exports a computer works better than a phone.
Which formats can I upload and download?
You can choose MP4, WebM, or MOV when your browser can play the file. The download may be MP4 or WebM because the recording format depends on the browser and its MediaRecorder support.
Why does the preview or export stutter?
AI matting runs on your device, so an older phone, a high-resolution source, heat, low memory, or other open tabs can drop frames. Close unused tabs, choose 480p or 360p, and use a shorter clip for a smoother export.
Can it remove the background around pets, products, or objects?
Not reliably. The model is designed to find people, especially a person facing the camera. Pets, products, and other objects may be kept or removed incorrectly, so use a person-centred clip for the best result.
