What’s Your UT Austin GPA?

Calculate your University of Texas at Austin GPA the way the registrar does — on UT Austin’s official plus/minus grading scale, verified against the university’s own catalog. Enter your courses, grades, and credit hours below for an instant semester GPA, plus your updated cumulative GPA if you include your current standing. In short, this is a grade calculator for UT Austin students, built on the one official scale every college on campus shares.

And let’s clear up the biggest myth first: yes, UT Austin uses plus and minus grades. A−, B+, C− and the rest are all official, each with its own grade-point value. Many online calculators get this wrong, which is exactly why this tool is built on UT’s published scale.

How to Use the UT Austin GPA Calculator

  1. Add each course. Every row takes a course name, a letter grade from the dropdown (A through F, including A−, B+, C−, and all official plus/minus grades), and the course's credit hours.
  2. Use the Add Course button until your full schedule is listed — most students enter 4–6 courses per semester.
  3. Get your semester GPA instantly. The result updates as you complete your entries.
  4. Add your current GPA (optional). Enter your cumulative GPA and completed hours to see your new overall GPA after this semester.
  5. Plan ahead. Change any grade to a what-if value and watch how your GPA responds — ideal for finals-week strategy.

How UT Austin Calculates GPA

UT Austin converts each letter grade to grade points, multiplies by the course's credit hours, and divides total grade points by total hours:

GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

The official scale, published in UT's General Information Catalog and confirmed by Texas One Stop:

Grade Points Grade Points
A 4.00 C+ 2.33
A− 3.67 C 2.00
B+ 3.33 C− 1.67
B 3.00 D+ 1.33
B− 2.67 D 1.00
    D− 0.67
    F 0.00

Grades of I, Q, W, X, S, U, and CR carry no grade points and are excluded from the calculation. Note that undergraduates need at least a D− to earn credit for a course.

Worked Example: A Typical Longhorn Semester

Four 3-credit courses: A−, B+, B, C+.

Course Grade Points × Credits
Course 1 A− (3.67) 3.67 × 3 = 11.01
Course 2 B+ (3.33) 3.33 × 3 = 9.99
Course 3 B (3.00) 3.00 × 3 = 9.00
Course 4 C+ (2.33) 2.33 × 3 = 6.99
Totals   36.99 ÷ 12 = 3.08

Semester GPA: 3.08. See how the plus/minus grades shape the result — straight B's would give exactly 3.00, but the A− and B+ lift it while the C+ pulls it back. That's the official scale in action.

A warning: some third-party "UT Austin GPA calculators" floating around the web publish wrong point values — for example, listing C− as 1.33 or D− as 0.33, when the official values are 1.67 and 0.67. Always check a tool against the catalog scale above. If you're comparing tools, our general UT GPA Calculator page runs the same verified math with UT-system-wide context.

Getting the Most Out of UT Austin's Scale

  • B+ vs B− is a 0.66 swing. On this scale, plus/minus movement matters enormously — a B+ (3.33) and B− (2.67) are nearly two-thirds of a point apart. Know exactly where each course stands before finals week.
  • Know the Dean's List bar. UT Austin recognizes high semester GPAs — check the current threshold for your college and model it here.
  • Repeated courses have rules. UT Austin's policies on repeats are specific; a retake doesn't always replace the original grade the way students assume.
  • Trust but verify. Use this for planning; your official posted GPA from the registrar is what counts. When finals approach, use our Final Grade Calculator to find the exact exam score each target needs.

Two UT Austin Details Most Students Miss

The scale and formula are the core of it, but two UT-specific details trip up nearly everyone.

Find your credit hours from the course number. At UT Austin, the first digit of a course number usually tells you its semester hours — M 408C is a 4-hour course, E 316M is a 3-hour course. That is the number that belongs in the credit-hours box above.

Know which scale you are on. Undergraduates use the 4.00 scale on this page. The UT Austin Law School uses a separate 4.30 scale — if you are a law student, your grade points work differently and you should use a law-school calculator instead.

And note: your University GPA counts only letter-graded coursework completed at UT Austin — transfer and AP/IB credits earn degree hours but never enter the GPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does UT Austin use plus and minus grades?

Yes. Despite the persistent myth, UT Austin officially awards A−, B+, B−, C+, C−, D+, and D−, each with a distinct grade-point value published in the university catalog.

What is the official UT Austin grading scale?

A = 4.00, A− = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B− = 2.67, C+ = 2.33, C = 2.00, C− = 1.67, D+ = 1.33, D = 1.00, D− = 0.67, F = 0.00.

How is semester GPA different from cumulative GPA at UT Austin?

Semester GPA covers one term; cumulative GPA covers all your UT Austin coursework with recorded letter grades. Enter your current GPA in the optional section to get the updated cumulative figure.

Do failed or repeated courses count?

F grades count as 0.00. Repeated-course treatment follows UT Austin's specific policies — check the catalog, since a retake doesn't always replace the original grade.

What GPA do I need for UT Austin admission?

Admitted students typically have very strong high school GPAs (often ~3.8+), but UT Austin uses holistic review — class rank, essays, and extracurriculars matter too.

What about pass/fail classes?

Credit/no-credit and similar symbols (CR, S, U, I, Q, W, X) are excluded from GPA computation.

Is this calculator official?

No. It's an independent tool built on UT's published scale for planning. Your official GPA is the one posted by the UT Austin registrar.

Why do some sites show different UT Austin grade points?

Because they're wrong — several third-party pages publish incorrect values (e.g., C− as 1.33 instead of 1.67). The table on this page matches UT's official catalog.

Does UT Austin use a 4.3 GPA scale?

Not for undergraduates — the undergraduate scale tops out at 4.00 (A = 4.00). The separate 4.30 scale belongs to the Law School. If you are an undergraduate, enter A as 4.00.

I failed a pass/fail course — does it hurt my UT Austin GPA?

Yes. A passed pass/fail course adds no grade points and no GPA hours, but a failed one records an F — zero points with the hours still counted, so it drags your GPA down.
