Finals week is stressful enough without doing algebra to figure out what score you actually need. Our free final grade calculator tells you exactly what you need on your final exam to reach the grade you want — just enter your current grade, your target grade, and how much the final is worth. No sign-up, no downloads, instant answer.
This tool works the math both ways: what score you need on the final for every target grade, and what your course grade becomes for any final exam score. Either way, you can calculate your final exam outcome in seconds — before you walk into the room.

Letter grades use a standard 10-point scale (A ≥ 90, B ≥ 80, C ≥ 70, D ≥ 60, F < 60). Your school may use a different scale.

How to Use This Calculator
- (Optional) Type your course name so you know which class you're calculating for.
- Set the grade you want — type a number or tap one of the quick-pick grade chips, from 50% (F) up to 95% (A).
- Tell the calculator where you stand. If you know your current grade, choose "Yes, I know it" and enter your current grade plus the final exam's weight. If you don't know it, choose "No, work it out from my assignments" and list your assignments with their scores and weights — the calculator works out your current grade for you.
- Hit Calculate. You'll see exactly what score you need on the final, plus a table showing the needed final score for every target grade and a what-if table for different final exam scores.
- Want to see it in action first? Hit "Try an example" for an instant worked calculation. Your entries save automatically in your browser, so you can come back any time.
What Is a Final Grade?
Your final grade is the overall grade you receive for a course once everything is counted: homework, quizzes, projects, midterms, and the final exam. Most courses use a weighted system, which means each part counts for a different share of the total. The final exam usually carries the biggest single share — that's why one test can lift or drop your grade by a full letter.
The Formula (Worked Example)
Here's a worked example. Say you have an 82% in the class, you want a 90%, and the final is worth 30% (0.30):
Required = (90 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 32.6 ÷ 0.30 = 108.7%
You'd need 108.7% on the final — so a 90% is out of reach without extra credit. But what about an 85%? (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 92%. Tough, but possible — and now you know exactly what you're aiming for.
Tips to Ace Your Final
- Find your final's weight in the syllabus first — every number downstream depends on it.
- Work backward from your target.
- If the math says your goal is out of reach, ask your teacher about extra credit early — not the night before.

Know Your Ceiling: The Maximum Grade You Can Still Earn
Sometimes the useful question is not what you need — it is what you can still get. With a perfect 100% on everything remaining, your maximum possible course grade is:
Maximum grade = Current grade × Completed weight + 100 × Final weight
Worked example: you have 82% and the final is worth 30%. Maximum = 82 × 0.70 + 100 × 0.30 = 57.4 + 30 = 87.4% — even a perfect final caps you there.
Two edge cases worth knowing. If the required score comes out below 0%, you have already locked in your target — even a zero on the final keeps it. And if it is possible but above 95%, you are in the stretch zone: possible only with a near-perfect final, so set a backup target too.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my current grade?
Check your school's grade portal (such as Canvas or PowerSchool) or ask your teacher. Use your grade as it stands before the final exam.
What if I don't know my final exam weight?
Check your course syllabus — it's usually listed as a percentage of your total grade. If you can't find it, ask your teacher. Most finals are worth between 20% and 30%.
What does it mean if the required score is over 100%?
It means your target grade is mathematically out of reach without extra credit. Consider aiming for a slightly lower target, or ask your teacher about extra-credit opportunities.
Can I use this for GPA planning?
This calculator works with percentage grades. If you want to plan your GPA, try one of our GPA calculators in the related tools above.
Is this calculator accurate?
Yes — it uses the standard weighted-grade formula that schools themselves use. Just double-check that your inputs (current grade and final weight) are correct.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The calculator is fully responsive and works on phones, tablets, and desktops.
What is the highest final grade I can still earn?
Use the ceiling formula: Current grade × Completed weight + 100 × Final weight. With an 82% current grade and a final worth 30%, your ceiling is 82 × 0.70 + 100 × 0.30 = 87.4%.
My needed score came out negative — what does that mean?
You have already locked in your target. A negative number means even a zero on the final keeps you at or above your goal — treat the final as insurance, not rescue.
Exam Final Grade Calculator — What Score Do You Need?
Enter three numbers above: your current grade, the grade you want to finish with, and how much the final exam is worth. The calculator solves for the exact exam score that gets you there. For example, with a current grade of 88%, a target of 90%, and a final worth 25% of the course, you would need 96% on the final.
What do I need on my final?
Work it out in three steps. First, multiply your current grade by everything except the final's weight — if your final is worth 25%, that is your current grade × 0.75. Second, subtract that from your target grade. Third, divide what is left by the final's weight (0.25). The result is the score you need. Or skip the algebra: the calculator at the top of this page runs the same formula the moment you type your numbers in.
What is a finals grade calculator?
It is another name for the tool on this page: a final grade calculator students use during finals week to work out what score they need on a final exam to finish a course with the grade they want. Different name, same math — enter your current grade, target grade, and exam weight, and it gives you the number to aim for.
