How to Use This Weight Converter
Converting a weight takes three quick steps. First, type the number into the weight box; decimals are fine, so values like 2.5 or 0.75 work exactly as whole numbers do. Second, choose the unit that number is measured in from the drop-down list. Third, read the table: every row shows the same weight in a different unit, worked out instantly. If you picked the wrong starting unit, just change it — you do not need to retype the number.
The one-line summary above the table always shows the three units people reach for most often: pounds, kilograms and ounces. A second line rewrites the result as stones and pounds combined, which is how body weight is usually quoted in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
How Weight Conversion Works
Every weight unit can be described by a single number: how many grams it contains. Grams are the base unit of the metric system, and the imperial units are legally defined from the kilogram, so converting through grams is exact rather than approximate. To change a value from one unit to another, multiply it by the gram value of the unit you have, then divide by the gram value of the unit you want.
| Unit | Grams in one unit | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Gram (g) | 1 | The base unit everything passes through |
| Kilogram (kg) | 1,000 | 1,000 grams, used almost everywhere |
| Ounce (oz) | 28.3495 | One sixteenth of a pound |
| Pound (lb) | 453.59237 | Defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg |
| Stone (st) | 6,350.29 | Exactly 14 pounds |
| Metric ton (t) | 1,000,000 | 1,000 kilograms; also spelled tonne |
| US ton | 907,184.74 | 2,000 pounds; also called the short ton |
Because the pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, conversions between metric and imperial weights never drift: the same input always produces the same answer, whether you convert once or a thousand times.
Worked Example: Converting 60 kg to Pounds Step by Step
Say a bathroom scale, a suitcase tag or a gym plate is marked 60 kg and you need the pound value. Step one: turn kilograms into grams. 60 kg × 1,000 = 60,000 g. Step two: divide by the gram value of one pound. 60,000 ÷ 453.59237 = 132.2774. So 60 kg = 132.2774 lb, or 132.28 lb rounded to two decimal places. That is the same figure the converter shows above.
For a rough mental check, double the kilograms and add a tenth: 60 becomes 120, plus 12, giving about 132 lb — close enough for everyday estimates, with the exact figure ready when it matters.
The same two-step method works in any direction. To turn 200 lb into kilograms: 200 × 453.59237 = 90,718.47 g, which is 90.72 kg. To turn pounds into tons, divide by 2,000: a 4,000 lb load is exactly 2 US tons (and 1,814.37 kg if you need it in metric).

Which Weight Units Are Used Where?
Body weight. In the United States people weigh themselves in pounds. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, stones and pounds together are still common, although kilograms are used in clinics. Most of the rest of the world uses kilograms. If a fitness app, a medical form or a BMI calculator asks for a unit you do not normally use, convert once here and enter the number with confidence.
Cooking and baking. Grams are the most precise and repeatable way to weigh ingredients, which is why metric recipes use them. American recipes often give ounces and pounds instead. For kitchen jobs that mix cups, grams and oven temperatures, our baking converter covers those recipe-specific conversions.
Shipping and freight. International shipping, airline baggage and customs paperwork run on kilograms, while domestic US carriers usually quote pounds. Heavy cargo switches to metric tons or US tons, so checking which ton a quote uses can change the price math significantly.
Science and medicine. Grams and milligrams dominate laboratory and pharmacy work because small amounts need small units. This converter stops at grams, which covers everyday weighing; dose calculations belong with your pharmacist or clinician.
Libras a Kilos: Pounds and Kilos for Spanish Speakers
Si necesitas convertir libras a kilos, la cuenta es sencilla: una libra es 0.4536 kilos, así que divides las libras entre 2.2046. For example, 100 libras = 45.36 kilos, and 150 libras = 68.04 kilos. To go the other way — kilos a libras — multiply the kilos by 2.2046: 60 kilos = 132.28 libras. The converter at the top of this page does both directions; just choose Pounds (lb) or Kilograms (kg) as the starting unit.
| Libras | Kilos | Kilos | Libras |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 libras | 22.68 kg | 50 kilos | 110.23 lb |
| 100 libras | 45.36 kg | 60 kilos | 132.28 lb |
| 120 libras | 54.43 kg | 70 kilos | 154.32 lb |
| 150 libras | 68.04 kg | 80 kilos | 176.37 lb |
| 180 libras | 81.65 kg | 90 kilos | 198.42 lb |
| 200 libras | 90.72 kg | 100 kilos | 220.46 lb |
Common Weight Conversion Mistakes
A stone is 14 pounds, not 10. It is tempting to treat stones like a decimal unit, but 1 st = 14 lb exactly. Someone who weighs 11 st is 154 lb, not 110.
A US ton is not a metric ton. A US (short) ton is 2,000 lb, or 907.18 kg. A metric ton is 1,000 kg, or 2,204.62 lb. Mixing them up throws a shipping or materials estimate off by roughly ten percent.
Troy ounces are different ounces. Gold, silver and other precious metals are weighed in troy ounces of about 31.10 g, not the everyday avoirdupois ounce of 28.35 g used by this converter. Never price precious metals with the ordinary ounce.
500 g is not 1 lb. It feels close, but a pound is 453.59 g, so a 500 g packet is about ten percent heavier than a pound. In recipes and postage, that gap is big enough to notice.
Pounds of pressure are not pounds of weight. Tire pressures and similar figures use pounds per square inch (psi), a pressure unit. This tool converts mass and weight units only.
